WHAT IS MEN-TOOLBOX?

Men-ToolBox is an innovative app designed for men of African and Caribbean heritage, providing access to culturally relevant & attuned information regarding manhood, mental health and overall wellbeing.

When it comes to manhood it's important to remember it is not a singular phenomenon whereby one definition fits all. Hence the tool box analogy. Think of manhood as a toolbox consisting of many appliances for different circumstances. Each tool represents a different aspect of masculinity, such as strength, empathy, resilience, and vulnerability. Knowing how and when to use these tools is what allows us to maximise their effectiveness.

Seeing manhood as a tool box allows us to ask these 3 vital questions;

  • What tools do I have available?

  • How skilled am I in using these tools?

  • How do I add to my tool box? (As some may become insufficient).

Also being aware there are tools we may not be equipped to use based on the type of individual we are. Our learning styles or love languages for example may mean we are better suited with particular tools than others. Knowing our strengths from our weaknesses gives us the opportunity to build effectively while working on skills less developed.

  • ‘Evidence shows that Black men are far more likely than others to be diagnosed with severe mental health problems and are also far more likely to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act’ - Mind

  • The Government needs to take urgent and concerted action to address the causes of poor mental health among young Black men in the UK".

malik sankara

Malik Sankara is a passionate advocate for men’s mental health, with over eight years of experience focused on men of African and Caribbean heritage. His journey began in 2017 after facing personal challenges with depression and anxiety, leading him to establish Men Of The Diaspora, a safe space for men to share and heal.

Recognising the need for open dialogue, Malik co-founded MANifest, a monthly event addressing topics like mental health, vulnerability, and relationships. He later collaborated on ManDem On the Mat, offering yoga, meditation, and sound healing workshops, all of which experienced sold-out success.

In 2024, he led his first transformative men’s retreat that combined shadow work, meditation, and wellness challenges. Through his initiatives, Malik continues to empower men and foster community healing.

Currently, Malik is developing Men-Toolbox, an app designed specifically for men of African & Caribbean heritage to provide access to culturally attuned resources that address the complexities of manhood facing this demographic.
